While snapping pics on Saturday, I captured one rider who I would eventually meet in the hospital later that weekend. Chad Paulsen was racing the 125 C class when he crashed and had to be rushed to the hospital, which delayed the race for quite a while. I learned later that he broke his back in the accident and initially had lost all feeling in his legs. When we went to visit him at the hospital, he said he could move his legs around a little, but it felt like his whole body was on fire. “I can’t really describe it,” he spoke of this tingly feeling. And although he wasn’t wearing the Leatt neck brace, (he had just ordered one before Christmas) the doctors said it wouldn’t have mattered anyway, because the injury was ultimately to his back. Still, as luck would have it, Chad was in second when he crashed – when I noticed this sick Active 8 Racing Honda rider flying by with these blond curls coming out from under his Six Six One helmet tagged with DFB – he was looking good out there!
Here’s to the luck of the draw and wishing Chad a speedy recovery from Monday’s surgery.
