December

“Rabbit rabbit, white rabbit.”
One superstition repeats that expression upon waking on the first day of every month. Today, I attended a funeral with a group of friends. Our friend’s stepfather left a legacy at his local pawn shop where he was gunned down.
My friend and her mother both clung to black dresses, then I saw the open casket, and all the young people sitting in the back.
After a poem, a letter, a song, and a hymn, tears had splattered on the sunglasses sittng in my collar, and my friends all sniffled next to me. The service ended with a psalm, then we said our sympathies and stepped outside to the sunshine.
Today, it was 80 degrees as usual, with a few clouds blocking out the bright blue. Here’s to the last month of the year; and here goes a quote from the song, “It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.”
Peace and love.
